Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme

The Home Office Announcement

On 13 September 2021 The Home Office announced further details of the Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme (ACRS). The Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme will provide protection for people at risk identified as in need.

The Government's Commitment

The government has committed to welcome around 5,000 people in the first year and up to 20,000 in the future. Priority will be given to the following groups:

    • Vulnerable people, in particular women and girls at risk, minority groups at risk (including ethnic and religious minorities and LGBT+);
    • Those that have assisted the UK efforts in Afghanistan;
    • Those that have stood up for democracy, women’s rights, freedom of speech, and rule of law;

Indefinite Leave to Enter or Remain

  • Indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK will be provided to everyone who is resettled through the ACRS. They will also be able to apply for British citizenship after 5 years in the UK under existing rules.
